Rapper neigen normalerweise ja nicht zu Schwermut und Trauer, sondern eher zu Aggression oder Selbstlob. Kanye West macht bei seinem vierten Studioalbum eine Ausnahme: Elf Songs plus ein Livetrack, die textlich wie musikalisch seine Trauer um seine plötzlich verstorbene Mutter und die Verarbeitung der schmerzhaften Trennung von seiner Lebensgefährtin ausdrücken sollen. Mit einem Vocoder stark bewaffnet und auch mit seinem diesmal ausgeprägten Gesang beweist Kanye West einmal mehr, dass er nicht nur rappen kann, sondern immer wieder neue Wege geht, dem HipHop eine Frischzellenkur zu verabreichen. Mit abwechslungsreichen Beats und klug ausgewählten Gästen, die sich aber zahlenmäßig in Grenzen halten, komponiert sich Mister West zusammen mit anderen Songwritern wieder in die gewohnte Erfolgsspur.

Sein Auftritt bei den diesjährigen MTV-Awards gestaltete Kanye West mit der Single „Love Lockdown“ und das illustre Publikum ging zurecht richtig ab: Dieser Track besitzt dermaßen viel Ohrwurmpotenzial, da passt alles zusammen: Eine meist verzerrte Stimme, die sich hörbar emotional steigert, und ein Beat, der sich mit aller Macht prompt ins Gedächtnis schleicht, bilden eine Einheit aus der nur etwas Gutes entstehen kann. Eher klassischen HipHop stellen „Amazing“ mit Gastrapper Young Jeezy und „See You In My Nightmares“ mit dem angesagten Lil Wayne dar und stellen sich nahtlos in die etwas andere musikalische Reihe der Kanye West Tracks anno 2008. Ob das intensive und emotionale „Coldest winter“ oder das mit einem minimalistischem Beat ausgestattete „Say you will“, es bleiben seelische Aufarbeitungen, die hohe musikalische Qualität ausstrahlen. Dabei vernachlässigt Mister West keineswegs den Faktor musikalische Unterhaltung, denn er bietet eine perfekte Produktion, die ein Paket von Songs mit Erfolgspotential und absoluter Club- und Hitparadentauglichkeit beinhaltet.

Bei allem Lob muss auch Kritik erlaubt sein: Der manchmal nervende Stimmverzerrer trübt das Vergnügen ab und an und auch die ungewöhnlich traurige Stimmung ist nicht immer erträglich und führt zu der Frage, ob Kanye West nicht zu sehr im Selbstmitleid badet, doch das sind nur leichte Kritikpunkte, die nicht entscheidend sind. Im HipHop-Genre hängt der 31-Jährige seine Konkurrenz immer noch locker ab, denn dieses Werk ist eine saubere Fortsetzung des wirklich guten 2007er Albums „Graduation“, welches auch schon absolut überzeugte und seinen Superstar-Nimbus bestätigte.
